Director’s Concept: Dilapidated greenhouse
Design Concept Statement: One Flew Over the Cookbook’s Nest is a realistic tragedy set in the early 60’s. The color palate I chose consisted of browns, creamy green, sickly yellow, with flashes of white. Green represented the humanity, growth, or sanity within a character, as well as helped to reinforce the set design’s “greenhouse” inspiration. Yellow represented characters who are spiritually weakened or further detached from reality, and white represented power and lack of humanity. I used a predominately white color palate for the nursing team. I wanted there to be a large contrast between the nursing team in white and the patients who were in earth tones. I designed the patients’ outfits to be unique to the character, but still had a cohesive harmony, to hint at an institutionalized dress code. Lastly, I designed characters who came to visit the institution outside this color palate to reflect their connection to the outside world.
